This fun and hands-on course is designed to give you the necessary skills and knowledge required to serve espresso coffee beverages using commercial espresso machines and grinders. This course applies to any hospitality organisation that serve espresso coffee beverages and espresso machine operators who operate with some level of independence and under limited supervision.

During this four (4) hour course, you will learn the skills of being a Barista in a small group environment, meaning that you get a more personal training experience and more time to practice your skills.

To enrol in this course, participants will need to hold a valid Statement of Attainment for the unit SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety.

Course Description

This course describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to extract and serve espresso coffee beverages using commercial espresso machines and grinders. It requires the ability to advise customers on coffee beverages, select and grind coffee beans, prepare and assess espresso coffee beverages and to use, maintain and clean espresso machines and grinders. Complex repairs of equipment would be referred to specialist service technicians.

Participants must

  • Provide certified copy of Statement of Attainment (SOA) for unit SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • Provide one form of photo I.D. (e.g. Passport, Australian driver’s licence, proof of age card)
  • Provide Unique Student Identifier (USI) number
  • Complete Trans-Plant Training Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment

This Barista course combines plain English, videos, photos, and questioning to ensure all learners are able to have the best possible chance at comprehending the required knowledge and skills. Participants should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of the course to complete the necessary enrolment paperwork.

If participants arrive 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time, entry to the course will be refused.

Training & Assessments

Our Barista course gives students the necessary skills to prepare and serve espresso in restaurants, bars and cafes using commercial espresso machines. During this four (4) hour course, students will learn how to organise coffee workstation, select and grind coffee beans, advise customers and take espresso coffee orders, extract and monitor quality of espresso, undertake milk texturing process, serve espresso coffee beverages, clean espresso equipment and practice on making ten (10) different coffee styles.

Barista training course consists of PowerPoint presentation, class activities, practical demonstration and end-of-the-day assessment.

Throughout the day students will complete a multiple choice, practical demonstration and short answer-based assessment which will confirm the knowledge and skills that have been achieved to demonstrate competency across the unit.


Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment (SOA) issued by Trans-Plant Training listing the unit of competency included in this training course.
